Extra Curricular

So much more than classes...

Student life at Superior Heights is also something students should consider when choosing their high school.  Steelhawk nation prides itself on maintaining an inclusive and safe environment where all kids have the opportunity to grow and flourish.  The student community is run by the school's super council - comprised of two divisions: student culture and student climate.  The culture council is dedicated to maintaining a high level of school spirit, fun and pride in daily life here at Superior Heights.  The climate council looks after the needs of all steelhawks ensuring that everybody finds their place and purpose in this tightly knit school community.

Robotics

Superior Heights competes in the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) series, a Worldwide competition that sees approximately five thousand teams in twenty countries attempt to qualify for the annual World Robotics Championships.  Robotics teams are extracurricular, and practice at lunch or after school in a season that starts in September and concludes in December with our local event, or in March for Provincial qualifiers.  Teams of 3 to 10 students design, build, program and test their engineering creations to score points in a game format that changes each year (2015 was a basketball-type game).  Superior Heights has fielded 4 or 5 teams each season, and has qualified at least one team to the Provincial Championships each year that VEX has been in the district.

Project ABCD

Project ABCD (Action for Building a Community that is Drug-Free) was created in response to the rising rates of substance use in schools that were affecting academic and social development. Project ABCD is based on a review of existing best-practices and literature using student engagement in substance use programming, and was created in consultation with Algoma Family Services. Project ABCD has been operating since 2009.

Link Crew

Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes grade 9 students and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, Boomerang Project’s proven high school transition program trains mentors from senior classes to be Link Crew Leaders. As positive role models, Link Crew Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the first year students to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school and help facilitate success.

More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in high school, their chance for success increases dramatically. Link Crew provides the structure for grade 9s to receive support and guidance from seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.

Coffee House

The guitar and recording technology classes collaborate once a month to present a fun evening of music - from solo acts to group work, covers of old favourites and new hits as well as originals, we do it all. We partner with local charities and causes close to our heart to collect funds and connect with our community.

QSA

Queer-Straight Alliance

Our goal is to provide a safe space for all students. We meet at lunch in room 122 (the theatre) to play games, create art, have discussions and connect with the community. We welcome allies, supportive friends and anyone and everyone from the LGBTQ spectrum. With QSA, we try to raise awareness about important issues for teenagers and talk about what makes school a safe and great place to be. In the past we have organized social campaigns like Day of Purple and AIDS Day and have thrown bake sales and galas and concerts.
